DETAILS Don’t let the award category fool you: Myatt Landscaping may have been honored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) for their maintenance work, but this Southern garden estate features some elite hardscaping, too.

“We created some new brick stairs with blue-stone treads. We created a larger brick entry banded by blue stone and a new brick walkway leading around to the side of the house,” says Herbie Champion, division manager, installation and construction at Myatt. “We installed the driveway with all the granite curbing and some granite inlays, plus rumble strips. We also created an outdoor kitchen to match the house.”

And that’s just to start. As visitors move into the backyard, they’re immediately surrounded by screening walls and an abundance of smart plantings in and around the garden area. It’s a peaceful, quiet environment, which is impressive considering the property borders U.S. Route 70, a major highway passing right through the area.

“(The clients) had a lot of noise coming through, so we had to do tons and tons of screenings and plantings to get rid of the noise and the traffic,” Champion says. “You don’t even know they’re technically backed up to Highway 70, and the property couldn’t get planted any more. It’s beautiful right now.”

Amidst the mature trees, ornamental grasses, stuffed planting beds and more, it becomes much more apparent why Myatt took home a silver award from the NALP’s Awards of Excellence program in the maintenance category.

"It's the epitome of a Southern garden, in my opinion,” Champion says. “When you walk through that back gate, it's just lush. I mean, there's ferns and hostas and hydrangeas and about everything you can think of blooming.” (Photo: Myatt Landscaping and Construction)

“We started the maintenance, originally, about six years ago, and we had it for about two months, and then (the homeowner) did one phase of enhancement, and then Herbie did the last big phase three years ago,” Tackett says. (Photo: Myatt Landscaping and Construction)
