Asian white birches (Betula platyphylla) are native to Japan, but perform well in U.S. landscapes. The fast-growing trees reach 50-ft. tall. Known for their white bark, Asian white birch bark does not peel like other birch varieties. They need moist soil and perform best in full sun, but do not do well in excessive summer heat. While bronze birch borer is an issue for these trees, the ‘Whitespire’ and ‘Fargo’ varieties have shown some resistance to borers and leafminers.
