Mike Garcia’s phone is ringing off the hook.
In fact, the founder of Redondo Beach, Calif.-based Enviroscape LA said he is turning away work because he’s so swamped with existing irrigation accounts.
What’s the buzz about? Subsurface drip irrigation for turf, Garcia said. To Garcia’s knowledge, there are no other companies offering the installation in the Los Angeles area.
Though subsurface drip irrigation has caught hold as a solid water-saving technique for landscape beds, it’s been slowly adopted for lawns, Garcia said. In a way, Enviroscape LA has a found a silver lining to the drought via its subsurface drip irrigation installations for turf.
The company secures most of its projects through relationships with general contractors, such as getting referrals from those who are constructing a new house.
The caveat to subsurface drip for turf, Garcia said, is often times irrigation contractors don’t realize there’s a fluke in the system until grass turns brown. For contractors just getting into drip irrigation for turf, he advised they do a few test installations on a close relative’s lawn or their own before marketing it to clients.
“If it’s not installed correctly, drip irrigation is going to get a black eye,” Garcia said. “I want contractors to learn this.”
To that end, Garcia keeps an active YouTube channel of how-to videos on subsurface drip and other pointers for contractors.
