To assess your company’s recruiting strength, answer the following list of questions and make note of the questions you cannot answer in the affirmative.

- Does a written position questionnaire exist for the position, outlining all of the details?
- Does a written job description exist for the position?
- Are job postings written and approved well in advance?
- Is a specific recruitment strategy for the position defined?
- Is there a defined process for screening resumes to select the most qualified candidates?
- Are candidates contacted promptly and professionally to arrange interviews?
- Are situational interview questions pre-prepared and in writing?
- Are interviews conducted with two or more interviewers in a group setting to reduce bias?
- Are final candidates asked to participate in one or more pre-employment assessments?
- Are job offers in writing and professionally prepared?
- Are job offers presented to candidates promptly and with an expiration date?
- Are negotiations handled with skill and adeptness?
- When an offer is accepted, does a written on-boarding process exist?
- Is someone responsible for on-boarding?
- Is new hire paperwork completed in a timely and accurate manner?
- Are new employees provided a formal orientation?
- Are new employees provided an employee handbook?
- Do supervisors perform a gap-fit analysis for the new employee?
- Do supervisors perform a personal development plan for the new employee?
- Are new employees assigned a coach or mentor?
- Are new employees provided with a date or time-frame for their first feedback review?
- Is an internal announcement made for the new employee?
- Is the new employee recognized in front of their peers?
Of course, not all positions require each of these 25 items to be in place. However, if you desire to be a magnet for snow talent, each item should be answered “yes” for some positions. In other words, you can’t ignore these items.
How many questions were you able to answer with a yes? Keep in mind that these 25 questions pertain only to recruiting and not other factors that may help you attract and retain talent. Nobody said becoming a magnet for snow talent would be an easy proposition. You have to decide how badly you want it.
