As outdoor environments gain prominence in urban and residential design, the need for skilled landscape and construction professionals is growing. Unilock, a North American manufacturer of paving stones, is responding by expanding its Paving the Future Scholarship to include students enrolled in architecture programs for the first time.
Launched in 2022 to mark Unilock’s 50th anniversary, the scholarship has awarded $225,000 to students in landscape architecture, construction and related fields across the U.S. and Ontario, Canada. The initiative aims to address the industry’s talent pipeline by supporting those preparing to design and build parks, plazas and outdoor living spaces.
Andrew Bryant, president and CEO of Unilock, said the scholarship honors the legacy of founder Ed Bryant and invests in future leaders of landscape design, architecture and construction. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership and a written essay on their career goals.
Last year’s recipient, Luviana McLean, credited the scholarship with helping her transition into a full-time role at Stantec, a global design and consulting firm. Her experience highlights the scholarship’s role in facilitating career entry for emerging professionals.
The expansion to architecture students reflects the growing overlap between architecture and landscape design, as both disciplines increasingly collaborate on sustainable and functional outdoor spaces.
Applications for the 2025 scholarship are open through Oct. 31, with winners announced in November. More information and applications are available at the Unilock Paving the Future Scholarship webpage.
