University of Georgia (UGA) is set to debut a new bermudagrass variety at the Southeastern Turfgrass Conference, according to The Tifton Gazette.
The 69th annual conference is scheduled for April 28 at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
DT-1, the bermudagrass, has been under research for more than 20 years, with turfgrass breeder Wayne Hanna first studying it in 1992.
“It’s a neat thing for me because it’s a conclusion of some of Dr. Hanna’s work before I was here, in addition to things I’ve done with him in the last six years,” said Brian Schwarts, Hanna’s successor and turfgrass breeder. “It’s just a very tough and drought-tolerant grass. Actually, as soon as it quits raining or you quit paying attention to your yard, it’s still performing well, unlike others that can start to fail.”
