Project EverGreen designated July 10-16 as national “Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids.” Awareness Week.
The initiative is intended to raise recognition of the program and spotlight its efforts to provide healthy, safe athletic and recreational green spaces for America’s children.
Much of the program’s focus is on addressing childhood obesity, the rates of which have doubled and quadrupled in the past 30 years, according to Project Evergreen. It does so by renovating and revitalizing athletic and recreational green spaces in urban communities to give children access to safe places to play and exercise.
“Investing in the renovation and revitalization of athletic and recreational green spaces is an investment in a healthier future for children across the country,” said Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen. “Our goal is to make sure that safe, modern green space is available so children can make exercise, athletics and recreation a part of their daily lives.”
Since the program’s inception in 2015, renovation projects covering more than 607,000 sq. ft. of athletic and recreational green spaces have been completed across the country including Atlanta; Houston, San Antonio, Round Rock and Ft. Worth, Texas; North Chicago, Ill.; Cleveland; Durham and Greensboro, N.C.; Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
