High school students in the horticulture and landscaping program at Central Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (CPI) are donating their time to build a patio for a U.S. veteran and wounded warrior.
Joe Luther and his students received a paver donation from EP Henry through its HeroScaping program to build a patio for the Central PA Home and Garden Show. After their display won “Best in Show,” the students broke down the display and will permanently install the patio design at the home of this year’s program recipient, Vince Reynolds.
Applicants for the “Patio for a Patriot” contest were nominated by the public during the Home and Garden Show. The students and a panel of judges selected Reynolds from 82 entries submitted.
Reynolds, of State College, Pa., served two tours overseas since 2010. He received a Purple Heart after his second tour when he lost the lower half of his left leg to an explosion while leading his troops on a mission in Afghanistan on Labor Day 2012.
The students, donating their time, began excavating the project on April 29. Once installation is complete, the official dedication will be held on May 27.
EP Henry’s HeroScaping program helps communities pay tribute to our nation’s heroes by donating hardscaping materials for veterans’ memorials and monuments. It has funded more than 59 projects across the Mid-Atlantic region.
