Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) launched a Facebook sweepstakes as part of its Look Before You Pump campaign. Running through April 6, the sweepstakes is open to legal U.S. residents, ages 16 and older.
Participants watch a 30-second, public service announcement explaining the importance of putting the right fuel—E10 or less—in outdoor power equipment. After answering one question related to the ethanol-warning message, participants can enter to win a $200 VISA gift card for gas. The more they share the sweepstakes with their friends, the higher their chances of winning. The winner will be contacted via email April 7.
The sweepstakes is designed to alert the public that price is not the only factor to consider when fueling outdoor power equipment, hitting on the mission of the Look Before You Pump campaign that warns the public of the adverse impact of putting more than 10 percent ethanol fuel blends into outdoor power equipment.
The urgency of the campaign comes from research that shows high-ethanol blends of gasoline (E15, E30, E50, E85) can damage or destroy small engines not designed to handle it. Moreover, consumer research shows 71 percent of Americans are not sure if it is legal to put high level ethanol gas into engines such as those in boats, mowers, chain saws, snow mobiles, generators and other engine products.
