Midwest Tree: Carolina Silverbell (Halesia carolina)

and |

Part of the Styracaceae family, Carolina Silverbell, also known as Snowdrop trees, are hardy in USDA Zones 4-8. The medium tree normally reaches heights of 30 to 40 ft., but can get taller with the right conditions. Though resistant to disease and insect problems, the tree does need highly acidic soils. It is sensitive to drought and soil compaction. It thrives in moist, well-drained locations. In spring, it flowers with small, white bell-shaped blooms. It has dark, yellow-green leaves that are elliptical and about 4 in. long. In fall, the tree produces 4-winged seeds in 1 ½-in. long drupes that hang in clusters. Carolina Silverbell makes a beautiful specimen tree in the landscape if the conditions are right.
