Matt Shooner, green industry marketer, dies

Matt Shooner, co-founder of Focal Point Communications, died in Cincinnati May 21.

In 1986, with his wife, Irene, he founded the marketing and advertising firm that specialized in helping lawn and landscape professionals reach their customers.

“My father spent 15 years operating a successful lawn care and maintenance business in the 1970s and 1980s, but he couldn’t find anyone to help him advertise his services,” said Joe Shooner, who assumed the role of company president. “He saw marketing services as an under-served niche in the green industry, so he jumped in with both feet, starting Focal Point in our family living room.”

Matt Shooner’s goal was to offer small businesses the opportunity to look good in front of their clients and prospects, Joe Shooner said. He saw association involvement as an important responsibility. He was a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals and its predecessor organizations, he participated in the Turf & Ornamental Communicators Association and was a founded member of Project EverGreen.

Funeral services will be held in Cincinnati on May 30.
