These medium-sized shade trees reach a height of 40 to 65 ft., usually with a broad, round crown. They are relatively pest free and resistant to disease. They prefer well-drained soils, and will withstand hot, dry areas and city conditions. The Sophora has large clusters of flowers that appear in late summer among its green leaves. Blooms begin when the tree is 10 to 15 years old. Yellow seed pods add interest after the tree has lost its yellow leaves in the fall. It is hardy in zones 4-8.
