DETAILS This prime housing site may have started as an overgrown and underdeveloped spot, but that didn’t stop Drost Landscape from seeing the full potential.
With a panoramic view of Lake Charlevoix and a steep 20-foot change in elevation from the driveway to the shoreline, the company went with a layered approach to the landscape, filling the spaces with tiered planting beds, retaining walls, patios and more.
But before everything could be finished, the renovation was almost flipped on its head as new owners of the property came in, leading to some changes to how the site was to be completed.
“When the cottage sold, the new owner wanted to finish what was started. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and everyone on our team was excited to help them reach their goal of creating a lasting landscape,” says Bob Drost, company president and founder. “They had a large family, and this large piece of property allowed everyone to come and enjoy the serenity Northern Michigan offers.”
And with the new owners and the layered design, the landscape incorporated several unique features as it was being constructed in tandem with the home. A golf green and tee box, a pool with fountains and an infinity edge, trails to walk through and an outdoor bar were just some of the elements that make up this outdoor space designed for fun family nights and entertaining guests.
Drost Landscape won a gold award from the 2024 NALP’s Awards of Excellence program for this project.
