DETAILS As they say, good things come in small packages, but sometimes it takes some big moves to make that true.
Take Singing Hills’ Reflejo Rojo project for example, a renovation of a residential home with a historic brick aesthetic. Space was tight, but that didn’t stop the company from making some huge changes.
One key move to get this urban home feeling like a serene sanctuary was the addition of a Soake Pool in the backyard, which required a 350-ton crane and a full street closure to drop it in place.
“Next thing you know, it’s like a show for the whole neighborhood on crane day,” says project manager Mick Edholm.
The company also worked vertically to add more character in the small space, both with water features against the pool wall and some extra greenery on the garage.
“We built some steel structures that we bolted to the wall and then put (some) faux green walls up to just soften it and add an element of green year-round — just in a place where there’s not going to be much that survives on that hot south-facing brick wall,” says Jake Leman, CEO of Singing Hills Landscape.
Plus, with some artificial turf and new plantings in the backyard, Edholm and Leman say it creates a safe and relaxing environment for the whole family to enjoy, and it ultimately won the property a silver award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Awards of Excellence program.
