High Performance: Disconnect from your business

I do some of my best work above the clouds. As a frequent flier, it’s always nice when the plane settles in at a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet. The sun is out. The ride is smooth. Drinks are served. And as the worries of life below the clouds fade away, my mind becomes clear. I can focus on business without the distractions present below the clouds.

The good news is that getting above the clouds doesn’t require a plane ticket. It simply requires disconnecting from normal environments to gain a different perspective. Some people call this, “getting out of the weeds.” Call it what you will. For me, getting above the clouds works just fine.

One way to disconnect is to attend a trade show, conference or some other industry event. Another is to join a peer group with periodic in-person meetings. Still another is to participate in site visit programs to see firsthand how other companies in your industry are set up. These are all great ways to disconnect. If a flight is involved, you just might get above the clouds.

When disconnecting, be intentional. Have a plan and act with purpose. Don’t squander a perfectly good opportunity to take advantage of this time. It’s also helpful to take good notes. Capture your thoughts. When great ideas are flowing, you surely don’t want to lose them.

What are your plans to disconnect this summer? Will you be getting above the clouds or out of the weeds? Either way, I hope you are able to do so and that you will make the most of it.

Now go forth.
