DETAILS David J. Frank’s (DJF) “Bespoke Sanctuary” project started bleak, with the client assuming only a small back porch was possible due to the property’s sloped terrain. However, DJF knew it could aim higher.

DJF came up with a redesign of the existing stone patio that now features a fireplace and pergola as the focal point of the backyard. These elements were designed to feel like different “rooms” that added a cozy place to entertain guests and provide scenic lake views.

The sloping landscape still provided challenges, and with a six-foot-wide cart path being the only way to access the site, large materials like stone and concrete had to be delivered in pieces.

Night and accent lighting was also added to create an inviting scene that enhanced the views at all times, resulting in DJF winning a gold award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ 2024 Awards of Excellence program for this project.

“Celebrating the great work of our team members never gets old. The focus we place on being an award-winning company has been part of our company history and culture for decades,” says Dan Klemenic, marketing manager at DJF.
