During a 6-month pilot of an irrigation controller recycling program, 10 Ewing locations collected more than 400 pounds of controllers for recycling. After seeing the success of this program, Ewing and Rachio have expanded it to include all Ewing locations.

“Sustainability efforts benefit us all, and this program in particular keeps outdated controllers out of our landfills, while also providing jobs for individuals with autism or other disabilities—two great outcomes that require very little effort,” said Brian Ewing, vice president of Sales at Rachio. “Rachio loves the way communities have embraced controller recycling, and are excited to expand the reach of this impactful program nationwide.”

The companies will continue a partnership with Blue Star Recyclers for the project. The program sends controllers to Blue Star Recyclers, based out of Denver, Colo., for recycling. Blue Star Recyclers, founded in 2009, recycles electronics and other materials while creating jobs for people with autism spectrum disorder or physical limitations.

“This program means more controllers are recycled and more jobs are created for individuals at Blue Star Recyclers,” said Bill Morris, CEO of Blue Star Recyclers. “The community wins by keeping this material out of landfills. Our workforce wins by having meaningful employment and reduced dependence on taxpayer funded benefits. Everyone wins when those two things happen.”
