Arborjet named recipients of its 2016 “Taking Root” college scholarships, awarding them to 10 graduating high school seniors.
The $1,000 scholarships are to be put toward pursing full-time studies in forestry, plant sciences, horticulture, entomology, environmental science or a related major at an accredited two-year or four-year college.
Arborjet’s “Taking Root” College Scholarship Program is currently in its third year and has collectively awarded $30,000 in educational grants.
“After seeing the record number of applications come in for our scholarships this year, it’s clear that there is a bright future for our industry,” said Russ Davis, president and COO of Arborjet. “We are delighted to welcome these talented young people to the tree and plant health care industry, and we are confident that we’ll see them grow successfully in their careers.”
The 2016 Arborjet “Taking Root” winners include:
- Maureen Cottrell of Haverill, Mass., who will attend University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Mass., to major in natural resources;
- Tess Reeves of Orange, Va., who will attend Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., to major in landscape architecture and horticulture;
- Charles Smith of Holt, Mich., who will attend Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., to major in environmental science;
- Jessica Sourbeer of Pittsburgh, who will attend Penn State University in State College, Pa., to major in forestry;
- Elise Tomaszewski of Saint Clair Shores, Mich., who will attend Michigan State University in East Lansing to major in horticulture;
- Lauren Trapani of East Greenwich, R.I., who will attend The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, to major in environmental economics;
- Conor Smith of North Granby, Conn., who will attend University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., to major in forest technology;
- Brenna Christensen of Harwinton, Conn., who will attend University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt., to major in environmental science;
- Lucy Lee of Forest Hills, N.Y., who will attend Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., to major in plant sciences; and
- Kellee Edington of Terre Haute, Ind., who will attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., to major in forestry.
