DETAILS When this roughly 25-year-old residential property needed a face-lift, it quickly turned into a multifaceted collaboration.

With an interior designer renovating the house from the inside out and a pool builder friend installing a 55-foot lap pool, the client brought in Randy Lee, owner of Landscapes by Randy Lee (LRL), to merge everything through a hardscape redesign.

“I think our landscape really was the thing that tied it all together,” Lee says. “I think that’s the most important part; that (when) your team works together, you all create something that ends up terrific.”

And the collaboration was terrific, earning LRL a silver award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ 2024 Awards of Excellence program.

While there were some complications with the slope of the backyard requiring 100 yards of soil to make the space more user-friendly, Lee says the redesign allowed for plenty of creative opportunities.

The driveway and walkway is one example, featuring a modern, geometric design that matches the client’s home and is outfitted with artificial turf. Lighting also played a major role, with more than 100 regular and color-changing LED fixtures giving the landscape life into the night and providing extra safety.

Lighting is one of my favorite things,” Lee says. “I had a friend many, many years ago who said, ‘If you’re not lighting up your landscape, your landscape basically goes to sleep at dark.’”
