Accounting for irrigation replacement parts can be “a nightmare,” says Mike Martinez, owner of Newtex Landscape in Henderson, Nev.
The 100-employee firm does mostly commercial landscape maintenance work, including irrigation maintenance, for its clients.
Crews used to track irrigation replacement parts on a checklist they submitted monthly to the accounting department. Newtex billed about $2,000 per month in irrigation parts using this method. Martinez knew this system was inefficient and likely inaccurate, but he didn’t have a better way, until he devised a mobile app to collect this data and other landscape maintenance information. The app, Cappsure It, is available for iPhone and Android. Newtex has used it for two and a half years. A growing list of other firms are joining the company.
With the app’s irrigation parts reporting function, it’s easy for technicians to record which parts were used for repairs so they can be correctly invoiced. Newtex now bills about $15,000 per month on average in irrigation parts. Record-keeping alone accounts for the $13,000 disparity from doing it “the old way,” Martinez says—pointing out it’s a nice ROI for a tool that costs $15.99 per property per month.
