Northeast Tree: Ilex vomitoria ‘Pendul’ Weeping Yaupon Holly

and |

Weeping Yaupon Holly has an irregular, weeping form that can reach heights of 30 ft. or more, but ordinarily grows to 15 or 20 ft. tall with a 6- to 12-ft. spread, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The male and female flowers appear on separate trees. Its small leaves are oval and gray-green. In the fall and winter the tree produces red berries. Male plants do not produce berries, so may be better suited for tidy landscapes. Trees can be planted as specimens or 8 to 10 ft. Trees planted beside walkways will need to be trimmed so lower branches allow traffic to pass underneath. The North American native tree is adaptable to a range of cultural conditions. It is tolerant of drought and sea salt.  It does not sprout from the roots like some hollies do, so maintenance is minimal other than some pruning to maintain its distinct shape. It is resistant to disease.
