DETAILS The owners of this 1914 Spanish revival home have a keen eye for artistic design, making this site an obvious choice to upgrade from the previous mundane landscaping to an award-winning blend of historic roots and modern charm.
Keven Winkelmann, PLA with Designs By Sundown (DBS), says privacy was a key goal for the renovations, and a 2-foot grade change from the front street to the back alley was a key challenge that was solved with a new retaining wall and staircase.
In addition, DBS’ Jeromy Montano, PLA, ASLA, says the back perimeter wall was increased by nearly 4 feet to further the secluded feel, and due to the historic neighborhood, materials had to be carefully reused or selected to meet the neighborhood’s standards.
“Given that the back wall was a structural wall, it allowed us to kind of backfill that with soil to create a raised planter,” he says.
And when it came to plantings and a handful of sculptures on display, Montano says a lot of work went into finalizing the small details.
“Every little detail mattered to (the clients) … and everything was very meticulous, from the plant material to the placement of each tree,” he says.
And the details definitely mattered, winning the property a gold award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Awards of Excellence program.
